Toby's Hat in the Park

Sam walked into the sunny park. Toby the turtle was near the bench. He looked upset. "I lost my hat," Toby said. "My soft blue hat is gone." Sam felt sad for Toby. "We can find it," Sam said. Toby nodded. They looked at the grass near the bench. The hat was not there.

Sam and Toby walked to the swing set, where Lila the giraffe stood. "What are you doing?" Lila asked. "We are looking for Toby's hat," Sam said. Lila joined them and wanted to help. She looked high and low, checking under the swings and near the tree, while Sam and Toby searched beside her. They looked carefully, but the soft blue hat was not there.

They walked to the pond, where Pico the bird flew down to meet them. “I can help,” he said, then he lifted into the air and flew over the water, looking near the rocks while Sam and Toby searched along the path. Toby felt worried. “I really like my hat,” he said, watching the ground as he walked. They looked carefully around the pond, but the soft blue hat was not there.

Sam stopped to think and asked, “Where did you last have it?” Toby said, “I had it when I ate my snack.” So they walked back to the picnic table, where crumbs were still on the wood. Sam bent down to look under the table, then paused. “Wait,” Sam said. Under the nearby bench, tucked close to the legs, was the soft blue hat.

Sam picked up the soft blue hat and handed it to Toby, who smiled and said, “Thank you.” Lila and Pico came over, and soon they were all standing together, feeling happy. Toby put on his hat and said, “Next time, I will keep it close.” Sam felt proud as he watched his friend. Then they all ran off to play together in the park, laughing and having fun.
