The Day the Zoo Sounded All Wrong

Matt walked through the sunny zoo. He liked the sounds. Lions roared. Monkeys chattered. Birds sang. Then Ziggy the zebra trotted up. Ziggy had found a shiny bell by the gate. Ziggy gave the bell a big ring. Ding! Everything changed. Lila the lion opened her mouth and said, “Ooh-ooh!” like a monkey. Bobo the monkey let out a loud ROAR. Birds squeaked like mice. The zoo sounded all wrong. Animals looked at each other and shook their heads. No one knew who was who. Matt covered his ears, then took them away and listened again. “We have to fix this,” Matt said. Ziggy blinked at the bell. Then they started to look for answers.

Matt and Ziggy went from pen to pen. “Say something,” Matt told Lila the lion. “Ooh-ooh!” said Lila again. “That is not your voice,” Matt said. They listened to Bobo the monkey. “ROAR!” Bobo shouted. Matt tapped his chin. “The voices are all mixed up. The bell did it.” Ziggy looked at the shiny bell and gave a small ring. Ding. Now Lila squeaked like a bird. Bobo barked like a seal. “That made it worse,” Matt said. Ziggy’s ears drooped. Matt held up a hand. “Wait. We need to match each voice to the right animal.” They listened very carefully to every sound. Then they made a plan.

Matt stood by the bell with Ziggy. “Ring it once for each voice we want to fix,” Matt said. “We will listen and choose.” Ziggy gave a gentle ring. Ding. “Roar!” came from somewhere. “That belongs to Lila the lion,” Matt said. Lila stepped forward. The roar slipped back to her. They kept going. Ding. Chatter went to Bobo the monkey. Ding. Sweet song went to the birds. One by one, the right sounds found the right mouths. The zoo filled with the sounds Matt knew. Ziggy nudged Matt and smiled. Matt grinned and said, “When I listen closely and help, I can set things right.”
